Still struggling to get back to the burning truck to help members of his unit, a missile cut through the vehicle – and severed his left leg. While helping others, he survived two explosions and five bullet wounds. Now, the Orange County community is here to help him and his family. Building Homes for Heroes gifts mortgage-free homes to wounded veterans who served during the time of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Our organization adjusted our processes so that we have employees always checking in on our veterans to make sure they feel fully supported and their voices are heard. We also formed a new Ambassador Program featuring several of our veterans that allows them to have direct input in all of our decision making.

We recognize that not all metrics and beacons equally predict a charity’s success. The percentage each beacon contributes to the organization’s overall rating depends on the number of beacons an organization has earned. The family of Army MSG George Vera, a Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star recipient who was injured in Afghanistan, shares his story. Retired Air Force Technical Sergeant Rahmeka Hopkins tragically struggles with cancer due to toxic exposure during her service. Part of our goal in rating the financial performance of charities is to help donors assess the financial capacity and sustainability of a charity. As do organizations in other sectors, charities must be mindful of their management of total liabilites in relation to their total assets. This ratio is an indicator of an organization’s solvency and or long term sustainability. Dividing a charity's total liabilities by its total assets yields this percentage. In 2020, we stepped in to help veterans with emergency funding during the Covid crisis. Audited financial statements provide important information about financial accountability and accuracy.

Your gift to Homes For Heroes will enable us to continue to build, equip and operate more tiny home villages for Veterans across Canada. Each village will provide 5,000 to 9,000 bed-nights per year for Veterans experiencing homelessness. With your support, Veterans who are in crisis will have the breathing space they need to embark on the path to stability and self-sufficiency. Our organization empowers all of our team members with the liberty to lead in their respective roles and assignments, allowing everyone to freely utilize their expertise to advance the organization's mission. We have also created an Ambassador Program, which allows our veterans themselves to take up leadership positions and learn the ins and outs of the nonprofit world.

These guidelines foster good record keeping procedures that promotes data integrity. Here we are reporting on the existence of a policy as reported by the charity on its Form 990. If the charity does not have a Records Retention and Destruction Policy, then we deduct 4 points from its Accountability and Transparency score. This policy outlines procedures for handling employee complaints, as well as a confidential way for employees to report any financial mismanagement. Providing copies of the Form to the governing body in advance of filing is considered a best practice, as it allows for thorough review by the individuals charged with overseeing the organization. The Form 990 asks the charity to disclose whether or not it has followed this best practice.

The organization builds or modifies homes, and gifts them, mortgage-free, to veterans and their families.
